The Decline in Labor Compensation ’ s Share of GDP : A Structural Decomposition

چکیده
A book in memory of Wassily Leontief would hardly be complete without some piece on the structure of the American economy. After all, Professor Leontief had developed his first input-output table using US data and subsequently published his first three books with the purpose of examining the structure of the American economy (Leontief, 1941, 1951, 1953a). In this contribution, we study the decline of labor compensation’s share of US GDP in the eighties and early nineties. According to data on gross domestic product constructed by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), this share steadily decreased from 59.1 to 56.0 percent between 1982 and 1997. This 3.1 percentage point drop may not seem notable. But it contrasts strongly against its steady rise of 6.6 percentage points from 1950 to 1970 (from 52.8 to 59.4 percent), when productivity rose rapidly. Moreover, it is clear that wage rates did not increase at the same pace as labor productivity during this period. Recent literature suggests many potential causes of this phenomenon. Some of the causes pertain to almost all industries of the American economy (shift effects), whereas

The Sources of Labor Productivity Growth in Norway, South Korea and Iran: A Structural Decomposition Analysis
Abstract In this paper, using a structural decomposition analysis (SDA) and the latest available input-output tables we investigate the sources of labor productivity growth in Norway, South Korea and Iran. Then, the contribution of each source in the growth of labor productivity is discussed. The results show that among six factors, value added coefficient is the most influencing factoracross al...
متن کاملLabor Share in the Change of Japanese Industrial Structure
The investigation by E. Dietzenbacher et al. (2004) has shown the decline of the U.S. labor share for a term of 1982-1997 in spite of the rise of labor productivity. This controversial observation must be inquired to be valid for the other economy or not, and it should be explained for those dynamic causes of change. This research adopted the extended multiplicative structural decomposition ana...
متن کاملDecomposition analysis of Changes in Energy Consumption in Iran: Structural Decomposition Analysis
The aim of this study is decomposition of the changes in energy consumption with emphasizing the structural changes in Iran during 2001-2011 using Input- Output Structural Decomposition Analysis (I_O SDA). Structural changes in this study represent the changes in structure of intermediate input in sectors and also changes in structure of final demand categories. Structural changes in intermedia...
متن کاملRegional Income Inequality in the Post War Japan
The objective of this study is to measure regional income inequalities in Japan in the postwar period by using the weighted coefficient of variation and the Theil T index and explore factors determining regional income inequalities by using several inequality decomposition techniques. Regional inequality in per capita GDP, as measured by the weighted coefficient of variation, first increased an...

Abstract The aim of this study is of the effect of structural changes in higher education on changes of output in Sistan and Baluchestan Province using structural decomposition analysis (SDA). The input-output tables of this region for the period 2006-2011 have been employed as the database of the model. The structural changes were decomposed into two factors: changes in share of specific sect...
